The basic research department is the key part of the laboratory comprising four research groups and one test group. The Department’s primary work focuses on vehicle system dynamics and strength, bogie technology, wheel/rail relation, measurement and failure diagnosis, test facilities development, and test studies. The department has developed the roller test rig, parameter measuring stand for vehicles and other large scale test facilities; these equipments have been utilized to test the dynamic performance of many high speed vehicles. A large number of basic research projects including two key natural science foundation projects have been completed and important progress has been achieved in wheel/rail interaction, pantograph/cateneary relation and nonlinear vehicle system dynamics.

& Basic research:

  1. Rail vehicles: nonlinear stability, active suspension, vibration and noise reduction, fluid-solid coupling for vibration, train dynamics and virtual prototype etc.
  2. wheel/rail interaction: wheel/rail contact geometric relation, creep theory, derailment, adhesion, corrugation, rolling fatigue
  3. Pantograph/ceteneary relation: coupled dynamics, hybrid simulation.

& Test research:

  1. Vehicle parameter measurement: wheel load, gravity center/quality/moment of inertia of the bodywork, the primary and secondary suspension parameters of bogie, relative friction coefficient etc.
  2. Railway vehicle test: rig tests and track tests including tests on dynamics performance, traction braking performance and suspension mode.
  3. Components test: material fatigue feature, structural dynamic/static strength, anti-seismic performance and wear-resistance.

& Facility development:

  1. Test equipment: roller rig, fatigue stand, bogie parameter measurement stand, bogie test stand, electronic/hydraulic shock excitation system, damping measurement stand.
  2. measurement devices: data acquisition and processing system, line detection system for tilting train

& Tests:

The roller test rig is used to test the performance dynamics and braking of railway vehicles. Since 1995, more than 50 test projects have been completed involving locomotives, passenger cars and freight cars. In addition to this, the roller test rig is also used to optimize and enhance vehicle performance. The roller test rig has become an important facility for the development of new vehicles and basic wheel-rail interactions research.
